Organize your block, and take advantage of this half day event to clean up your back lane.  This year we have organized free dumpsters, a material separating area, and a free neighborhood BBQ to feed the hungry alley crews.

Our alleys are often overlooked and become a neglected dumping ground burdened with worn mattresses, overgrown trees, and old construction materials.  The Nutana and Varsity View Community Associations would like to up root all that junk and inspire the transformation of these spaces into a healthy and clean part of our neighborhood.

Take a strong lead with one or two of your block's residents.

  • Invite your neighbours to join in the clean up.  A "Hello" and a handshake over the fence can also get things started.  Make a short event of it and it becomes a great opportunity to meet your neighbors.
  • Suggest starting at 9 am Saturday morning, and as a group push, pull, rake and mow your way to the other end of the alley by 12 noon or earlier.
  • Organize a truck or utility trailer to pile up the garbage as you move along the lane.  Shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, hand tools, garbage bags and gloves can be a great asset.  All material including large objects like mattresses, appliances and branches can be disposed free of charge at the Victoria School parking lot between the hours of 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM, and while you are there enjoy a free hot dog.

Great things happen when a small group pitches in to inspire improvement in this often forgotten space.  Basketball hoops, hockey nets and managed greenery can replace overgrown trees and dilapidated garages, and the more your neighbors use this space, the better they are at discriminating unwanted behavior from regular recreation.  The goal is to slowly transform these spaces into a well cared for extension of our own yards.
